Do you ever notice your gums bleeding when you floss or brush your teeth? Bleeding gums may have many causes, ranging from the wrong brushing technique to a more serious condition, such as gum disease. Bleeding gums are not in itself dangerous, but the underlying condition causing this symptom may be. Here is a list of some possible causes of bleeding gums.

Gingivitis : It is the inflammation of gums. The main reason of gingivitis is accumulation of plaque at gumline. When this plaque remains there for longer time it causes gums to swell and make them tender and bleed during brushing. If not treated it leads to serious periodontal problems and your tooth become loose.

Hard Brushing or flossing: very vigorous and hard brushing can damage your gums and tooth surface also. It also results in receding gums. Proper brushing technique and soft bristled brush should be used for healthy gums and teeth.

Pregnancy : sometimes during pregnancy women develop a condition known as ‘Pregnancy Gingivitis’ which causes swollen and bleeding gums.

Health problems : bleeding gums may be the symptom of some health problems such as liver disease, blood clotting disorders, anemia, leukaemia etc.

Blood thinners : if you take blood thinners, these medications can result in easier bleeding from gums.

If your gums bleed regularly or enough to worry you, make an appointment with your dentist. It could be a sign that something else is wrong.
